Plug your Venture Capital requirements

The thinking behind the SA VC Strategist blog is to try and establish something of a South African Venture Capital community for venture capitalists / investors to meet with potential business plans.

Personally I think it is one of the reasons that the internet is such a powerful tool. People looking for funds can throw a business idea out there and venture capitalists or investors can assess the options available to them.

With a bit of luck some deal flow can be generated if a decent venture capital community can be established. My personal opinion is that start-up / venture capital goes WAY beyond just askng for a hand out. I think the management skills needed to get the business off the ground are even more important than the money, which is why I think we'd like to focus on with this blog.

But for the mean time - COMMUNITY BUILDING IS THE NAME OF THE GAME...

So for that reason, I'm inviting South Africans who believe they have a good business idea but need some Venture / Start up capital to have a plug for business in the comment section of this blog and maybe tell our readers a bit about your idea, the kind of capital you are trying to look at and what skills you have / need and what kind of money you are looking for.

We don't want your whole business plan!

I read somewhere that if you can't sell your business in 200 words or less then your business plan isn't all that important. Maybe that should be the challenge!

Post your business ideas below and lets see what we can build up as we go along...

One of the areas I am currently looking for venture capital experience is around the establishment of a black owned and managed equity research house in South Africa.

One of the major financial institutions in South Africa already offers the startup capital and financial agreements and I have a big part of the marketing channel covered through my existing media relationships

HOWEVER

The areas where I believe I would enjoy support would include:

- Identifying sharp, young black talent to run such a business

- Establishing a business model that would at least have some cost containment early on rather than bleeding before we start up.

Any ideas?

A 2nd initiative which I would be looking for some venture capital would be around some of our online publishing initiatives.

Over the last two years, we have worked hard to establish a couple of niche market titles.

2 of them have established traffic, brand and customers.

They are not pouring money but they are breakeven to marginally profitable.

However they were developed on some very outdated technology and with a revision of the technology that they are developed under, there would be an increase in profitability as well.

Capital amount would be in the region of around R50000 and redevelopment could be done without losing the existing revenue streams.

Good Morning

We are a local software company in our 9th year of trading, fully tax compliant and audited financials!

We are looking for VC +/- 3 million to roll out our software into the SADAC regions and back into the UK, we have ben into the UK 3 times previously and were fairly sucessfull!

With our main version(s)now being converted to asp.net2 and broadbang getting cheaper, we belive the logistics market will in the next 2 years expand and allow startup entrepreneurs to come in at grass roots level!
